Open House - STEAM Ahead Chemung

STEAM Ahead Chemung - Open House, Wednesday, December 5, 2018, 4-6pm. The Open House will showcase a pop-up exhibition of work created by students during their STEAM Ahead Chemung experience, inspired by the 2018 theme--birds! The pop-up exhibit also will feature photographs of the students learning about local birds, at their community centers and at the partnering organizations. "Watercolor Painting" Class (Two Days)

"Watercolor Painting" Class Led by Bridget Bossart van Otterloo, Saturdays, November 3 and 10, 2018, 9am-Noon, $68, Community Arts of Elmira! Watercolor Painting is for the beginner as well as the experienced student wanting to advance their skills. Watercolor is a versatile medium and we will cover a variety of techniques in this class. In this two-day class, learn about color theory, color mixing, brush handling, painting techniques and the different types of watercolor paper. The first class will start with some basic watercolor exercises experimenting with techniques and creating a color wheel. We will work from life as well as photographs in several different projects. Original Work Series - Reading & Book Signing with Author Destiny Kinal

Destiny Kinal is a lifelong political activist and community organizer, whose writing has spanned the range from journalist in Aspen, Colorado to analyst of new values and lifestyles to the Fortune 500, to book artist in France's book village in Languedoc, to bioregioinalist, whose work on the Susquehanna echoed those of her colleagues in other watersheds. And yes, that is her real name, awarded to her at birth by far-seeing parents. Destiny makes her homes on the Upper Susquehanna, on San Francisco Bay, and in south Florida on the Atlantic Coast. Original Work is a series that celebrates original work of poetry, prose and songwriting through featured artist readings and performances. The event is free and open to the public. "Intro to Exploring Fashion and Textile Design" Class

This two-day class will explore fashion and textile design through felting and fabric dyeing techniques. Students will create hand-dyed natural textiles using ice dyeing and shibori wraping techniques. Students will then use their textiles to learn unofelting, a way of combining wool into the weave of the dyed fabric. Students will leave with a dyed fabric sample, nunofelted sample, and a finished nunofelted scarf. Color theory, pattern design, and accessory design will be stressed in the final piece. About the instructor: Shannah Warwick is a new designer and instructor to the Finger Lakes Region. She moved from Philadelphia where she taught numerous workshops and classes at University of the Arts and Drexel University to name a few. She currently designs for her fashion line, BlckBts. Activate Autism Awareness - Employment Solutions and Community Arts of Elmira believe there is a need for Autism Awareness in our community. In partnership, we have designed this event, a place for kids to be themselves and to express themselves through creativity. During Activate Autism Awareness, two interactive sessions will be offered 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM. During the sessions, sensory-friendly stations designed for Pre-K to 6th grade students will be available. Family members, care providers, and members of the community also can interact during the event to enhance their support networks. "Hand Stitched Curved Piecing Mini Quilt" Class

In this class, students will make a small table quilt or wall hanging using a block called The Drunkard’s Square. Curved piecing can be challenging, but students will learn step-by-step how to make this lovely art quilt with lots of curves in it. No machines needed, students will be hand cutting and piecing these mini blocks. About the Instructor - Filomena Jack: I've been arting for more than twenty-five years and am generally over=stimulated by cute, bizarre, and funny things. I received my BFA from Jersey City University, teach art to a variety of audiences, and am always learning all I can about my materials and processes. I am currently working on pieces for a solo show to be displayed at the The Peeler Peacock Gallery in Corning in April 2018. Don’t be intimidated by your sewing machine! in this two-day class, students will bring their sewing machines, including all cables/foot pedals, supplies, and instruction booklets they might have. We’ll walk through the unique parts of each machine, learn how to thread it, create bobbins, and do basic maintenance. We will experiment with different stitches and settings and create a small zippered pouch. This is a true “take it out of the box” adventure! For the first class please bring good quality cotton (NOT WAXED) thread in 2 colors, scissors, 3 small pieces of fabric (at least 8x10” each), and a non-separating zipper at least 6” long. Public Art Mural Workshop with Artist Brad Leiby

Muralist Brad Leiby will lead a two-day (six hour total) workshop for students ages thirteen through adult in an indoor mural workshop. Participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to study multiple genres of public mural painting, including urban art/graffiti. In addition, they will be able to participate in a mural painting on the "Community Arts of Elmira - Public Art Wall" in the spring. The workshop is free. All materials provided.
